Bart Starr Alabama |
|||||||||||||||
Bart Starr is considered one of the NFL's greatest leaders, willing his team to two Super Bowl championships over his stellar career. After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1956, Starr was the 17th round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers. His playing time was limited during his first few years on the team, but the arrival of Vince Lombardi as the Packers head coach forever changed Starr's football career. Lombardi found Starr to be an intelligent and capable player with impressive ball-handling techniques and remarkable decision-making abilities. Under Lombardi's careful nurturing, Starr gained the confidence to become one of the NFL's greatest players. By 1960, Starr led Green Bay to the Western Division championship, the first in a long run of successes for the Packers. Starr went on to play for 15 years as a NFL quarterback and rose to become one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. |

From 1960 through 1967, Starr's win-loss record as a starting quarterback was an astounding 62-
24-4 with the Packers winning six divisional titles, five NFL champions, and two Super Bowls.
He held several NFL passing records, including the lifetime record of completing 57.4 percent of
his passes over a 16-year period while leading the league in passing three times.
After his playing career ended, Starr remained with the team and took on the role of head coach from 1975 to 1983. He was one of five Green Bay Packers to have his number (15) retired by the team. Throughout the course of his long and celebrated career, Starr was named the Most Valuable Player of the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968. Winning the league MVP honor in 1966, Starr went on to earn four Pro Bowl Selections. He was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1977. The NFL went on to name The Bart Starr Award in his honor, given annually to an NFL player who exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community. His other accomplishments include the NFL Award for Citizenship and the Byron White Award. Today, he runs Healthcare Realty Management and is co-founder of the Rawhide Boys Ranch, a place which assists boys in trouble. |
